Recently, the reputation system for Crucible was overhauled. This changed how Guardians earn Valor Points and is rewarded for their time in Crucible. Although it is controversial, the Crucible is an important part of Destiny 2. Here players can complete Seasonal Challenges and earn ritual weapons such as the Ascendancy. They also have the opportunity to farm the sought-after Masterwork materials. Learn about the Valor ranks to unlock all the rewards offered each season.
This Crucible Valor guide will explain everything you need to know about the reputation system, including how to quickly farm Valor and the Crucible Valor ranks.

Crucible Valor Ranks
You need to be aware of what you are getting into if you plan on resetting Valor in one season. There are 16 total Crucible ranks. They are divided into 6 divisions and 3 sub-ranks.
Bungie has made a significant change to the Crucible’s reputation system. They have significantly decreased the number of points Guardians must earn in order to max out their Valor ranks and reset them. They also changed the rate at which Guardians can farm Valor, so that it will take about the same time to max out. To reach rank 16, you will need 10,000 Valor Points starting in season 15. You can reset your rank at any time before the season ends.
Rank | Division | Point Range | Points to Rank up |
1 | Guardian I | 0 – 49 | 50 |
2 | Guardian II | 50 – 124 | 75 |
3 | Guardian III | 125 – 249 | 125 |
4 | Brave I | 250 – 499 | 250 |
5 | Brave II | 500 – 949 | 450 |
6 | Brave III | 950 – 1,549 | 600 |
7 | Heroic I | 1,550 – 1,924 | 375 |
8 | Heroic II | 1,925 – 2,524 | 600 |

The best thing about the Valor system? You can only earn Valor Points. Your Crucible reputation cannot be lowered if you reset it. At the end of any match in the non-competitive Crucible playlists, Valor (win or loss), is awarded. There are a few factors that affect the amount of points you receive. This will be covered in detail in the section on farming valor.
Valor Rank Rewards
You will be able to access a variety of rewards by gaining enough Valor to raise your rank with Lord Shaxx. Below is a complete list of Valor rank rewards, along with what you can expect when you reset your Valor.
Reward | Article | Item After First Reset |
Rank 4 | Upgrade Modules 3x | Similar |
Rank 7 | Rosescale Shader | 3x Enhancement Cores |
Rank 10 | 2x Enhancement Prisms | Similar |
Rank 13 | Projection of a One-Horned Ghost | 2x Enhancement Prisms |
Rank 16 | Launcher for Ascendancy Rocket Launcher | Ornament with a Crucible theme |
Rank 16 Maxed | 1x Ascendant Shard | 1x Exotic Engram |
Valor Rank Up | 1x Legendary Engram | Similar |
Division Rank up | 1x Prime Engram (+1 Power Level) | Nothing after the first Valor reset |
Although it is not difficult to max out your Valor ranks, it can be time-consuming. Bungie designed Lord Shaxx’s rewards in order to make your time in the Crucible worthwhile. These rewards are important because Guardians who enjoy PvP will now be able to earn Masterwork materials as they listen to their favorite playlist.
* Quick Note: This is Shaxx’s inventory after I have collected my Ascendancy rocket launcher and my golf ball.
How to earn Valor
We have already said that Valor can only come from participating in non-competitive Crucible playlists. Guardians used to be able to earn additional reputation points by fulfilling Shaxx’s daily bounty tasks, but these have now been modified to award only Experience and Bright Dust. To rank up your Valor, must complete matches as listed below. If you leave a match before the end, you will not receive any valor points.
Which playlists give you Valor points
- Control
- Elimination
- Rumble
- Mayhem
- Scorched Team
- Momentum Control
- Showdown
- Iron Banner
- Trials of Osiris
Your Activity streak and the outcome in a match will determine how much valor you can earn. For winning Crucible matches, players are awarded bonus Valor points. If you worry about losing points, don’t. You will not lose Valor points if you lose a match. This reputation cannot go down, it can only go up.
Per Match Valor
Activity Streak | Win | Loss |
1 | ?? ? | ?? ? |
2 | 151 | 76 |
3 | ?? ? | ?? ? |
4 | 177 | ?? ? |
5 | ?? ? | 115 |
*Note: This chart is incomplete at the moment. It will be updated once I remember not to go straight to orbit after it is over! !
The fastest way to get Valor
Even though you have less valor, it can take some time to get all the Valor rewards. Understanding how the Valor rank system works is just one piece of the puzzle. These tips will help you quickly farm Valor if you are looking to do it quickly.
Get on Activity Streaks
There was a win streak mechanic in the Crucible Playlist that gave you bonus honor depending on how many consecutive wins you had. Bungie has changed this to the Activity Streak. This new mechanic means that losses and wins are irrelevant. It doesn’t matter how many Crucible matches you have completed in a row.
You will get more Valor if you play as many matches back-to-back as possible.
These streaks are most effective during Iron Banner or Trials of Osiris. These playlists are limited-time and have the most powerful weapons available so it’s likely you will farm them anyways. Be aware that your activity streak can get broken if it isn’t.
Things that disrupt activity streaks
- Non-Tower / H.E.L.M. Destinations
- Non-Crucible playlists
- Resigning from a match currently in progress
It doesn’t really matter if your goal is to go to the EDZ and Nessus to get the exotic you want from Xur, or if you visit the Tangled Shore in order to replenish your glimmer to keep grabbing repeatable bounty opportunities. You shouldn’t do anything that’s not A) in the valor playlists, or B) going up to the Tower/the H.E.L.M. Your streak will be broken and you’ll need to start over.
Double Valor Weeks
Farming Valor can take a while and can get even more difficult if you don’t have enough time to earn and keep a 5x activity streak bonus. The Double Valor week buff will make up the difference. You’ll get twice the valor points for the match completion bonus, and the activity streak bonus.
These events won’t be found on any content calendar. Bungie usually pairs the Double Valor week and the Iron Banner week so you have the whole week to enjoy this catch-up mechanic.
Guardians will usually receive an update on Thursday or Friday, which tells them everything that is happening in Destiny 2 the week following their log-in. This update usually covers the Nightfall, gives hints about the next steps in the season’s story, and whether Trials of Osiris or Iron Banner will be active.
Bungie’s Community Managers make sure to mention when Iron Banner or Double Valor Weeks will be hitting the Tower. Follow @A_dmg04 or @cozmo23 Twitter for the most recent news.
Queue to join a Fireteam
Playing with a fireteam is the best way to win in Crucible. In the Crucible, communication and coordination are vital tools. One call can make all the difference in whether a game is won or lost. A single call can turn the tide of a match. This is especially true if you are playing against solo players.
It’s a great way of forming new friendships with PvP players by teaming up or collaborating with other clan members. Don’t forget to invite players you meet in public lobby.
Play to your Strengths
A streamer or Destiny PvP community might make you feel pressured to use certain weapons or subclasses or play a particular way. All of this is irrelevant, let me assure you. You should use the weapons, subclasses and playstyles you are most comfortable with, regardless of what the community considers “meta.”
If you aren’t happy with something, don’t force the community to tell you.
Don’t use hand cannons if you struggle to get the final blows. You can play passively if you have trouble with aggressive play. You can only achieve the objective if you are having an off-game.
The reverse is true. You shouldn’t overlook weapons and subclasses if they are deemed too powerful or broken.
Use Vex Mythoclast if you have it. Use Felwinter’s Lie and a max-range Fractethyst. If you are a skilled Stasis Hunter Shatterdive all of it. Use No Time to Explain or Arc Buddies to go full-on toxic and poisonous.
It doesn’t really matter how you play the Crucible. It doesn’t matter how you play the Crucible.
You can use whatever you like. Don’t apologize.
Resetting Your Valor Rank
After you have reached Rank 16 and reached maxed your Valor, it is possible to reset your Valor ranks at Lord Shaxx’s Tower. This will give you an Ascendant Shard, which you can use to masterwork an exotic piece of armor, or an Exotic Engram that allows you to get a free piece.
To reset your valor rank:
- At least Rank 16 (10,000 Valor Points) is attained.
- Go to the Tower by opening the Director
- Talk to Lord Shaxx
- The exotic engram can be collected at the end the rank rewards bank
Be sure to collect any rank rewards prior to resetting you valor. Some players have complained that they don’t receive the items in their inventory or Postmaster after it has been reset. Bungie will retrieve the items for you by submitting a support ticket.
After you have reset your reputation with Lord Shaxx your inventory will be reset and you can continue farming valor for the next batch of rewards. This is what you will need to do in order to unlock the Crucible-themed skin of The Ascendancy. It’s also one of the seasonal challenges of Season of the Lost.
